in order to see the job posting option). Members may also update their own
announcements and remove them from the list when no longer.

SEASONAL AVIAN CONSERVATION FIELD ASSISTANTat Kauai Forest Bird Recovery
Project / RCUH. Website: http://www.kauaiforestbirds.org. Location: 
Alakai Wilderness and Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii. Job Description: Seasonal
avian conservation field assistants needed for work with the Kauai Forest
Bird Recovery Project. Positions will last from late February,
2012 through mid-June, 2012. Our project focuses on a variety of work with
three endemic Hawaiian songbirds, the Akikiki, Akeke'e and Puaiohi that all
inhabit the extremely wet, beautiful and rugged montane rainforest at
located at ~4500ft on the island of Kauai. This is a rare opportunity to
work on endangered tropical species in the U.S while gaining valuable
research skills. The work is physically challenging, requiring a 4 to 8 mile
hike to the main field camps by way of steep slopes, tangled forest and
stream crossings. Daily field activities include conducting ornithological
fieldwork while hiking through dense forest, in and along streams, often in
rainy and chilly weather. 
Compensation is ~$1300/mo with limited use of project vehicles. Housing when
not in the field will be provided through the Project. The successful
applicant must provide own travel to Lihue, Kauai and have a valid drivers
license, and be legally eligible to work in the U.S. For more information,

Applicants must be able to detect and identify birds by color-bands and
sounds, physically fit and able to navigate rugged and complex terrain using
GPS and maps. Experience with nest searching and abundance surveys (e.g.,
line transects or point counts is required, and with songbird re-sighting,
behavioral observation, territory mapping, radio-telemetry, small mammal
trapping, and mist-netting/banding is strongly desired. 
Abundant enthusiasm for conserving Hawaii's native species (including the
ability to control invasive species along the way) is essential, as are
self-motivation, the ability to work well in a small team, a positive
attitude, and willingness to live in a remote field camps for more than a
week at a time. Careful data collection is a must, and when not in the
field, office duties will include data entry and organization, both
supervised and independent research projects, maintenance of field equipment
and living quarters, and other work around the office. Number of Openings:

VOLUNTEER FIELD ASSISTANT (1) needed for a behavioral ecology study of
Thick-billed Vireos on San Salvador Island, The Bahamas. Tired of the snow,
and short, cold days with no birds? Come to The Bahamas! See all your old
favorite migrants, plus lots of Caribbean endemics. Plus, the ocean and a
gorgeous beach are just across the street! Main duties involve hiking
through thick, dense scrub, resighting color-banded vireos and mapping
territory boundaries. Some mist-netting will also be involved.
Unfortunately, I cannot offer any stipend, and you must pay your own airfare
to Nassau, plus research station fees at the Gerace Research Station
($40/day, includes room and all meals). Dates are 8 Jan - 14 Feb 2012, and
to qualify for the $40/day rate, you must stay for 30 days within this time

Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Auburn University.

Auburn, AL or Laurel, MD. Duration: 18 months. Job Type: Post-doc. 
Number of Openings: 1. Job Description: The Alabama Cooperative Fish and
Wildlife Research Unit at Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama is seeking a
post-doctoral researcher to develop system models and decision support tools
to integrate habitat and population management for continental American
Black Duck populations. This is an 18 month, limited term non-tenure track
position and is funded from external sources. Continued employment is
contingent on availability of funding and satisfactory performance. Success
of this project will result in the development of a framework for using
Adaptive Management (AM) to manage Black duck populations and their habitats
to improve hunting opportunity and achieve predetermined continental
population goals. This position will focus on developing methods to reduce
ecological uncertainty through data analyses, parameter estimation, and
developing an adaptive management framework with competing system models.
The project may involve mark recapture estimation of demographic rates and
dynamic programming to find optimal policy recommendations. The position
will work closely with the science coordinator of the Black Duck Joint
Venture and with quantitative ecologists at Patuxent wildlife research
center to ensure that research products meet the needs of Fish and Wildlife
Partners. Qualifications: The minimum qualification is a PhD from an
accredited institution in wildlife biology, conservation biology, ecology,
biometrics or a related field. Applicants will be evaluated on their
knowledge, experience and abilities in the 3 primary areas of quantitative
expertise used in adaptive management: modeling, estimation, and
optimization. The successful applicant will also demonstrate commitment to
timely completion of deliverables, commitment to publication of results in
peer-reviewed outlets, and strong potential to work collaboratively with
multiple agencies on a highly visible research topic. The candidate selected
for the position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in
the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue
working legally for the proposed term of the appointment; excellent
