VOLUNTEERS – We are currently seeking applicants to fill five volunteer
positions at Tern Island Field Station, Hawaii. Volunteers will go on island
in mid-March and must be available for six months (March-September). We will
hire three people to focus on seabird monitoring and related work, one
volunteer to focus on native plant propagation and habitat restoration, and
one person to assist staff with station maintenance and repair duties. Note
that duties for all positions will frequently overlap, cooperation is
required, and those applicants with any combination of the above skill sets
are encouraged to apply. Tern Island Field Station is a remote island
located within French Frigate Shoals Atoll, part of Hawaiian Islands
National Wildlife Refuge, which is in turn part of the Papaha-naumokua-kea
Marine National
Monument.* US Fish & Wildlife Service administers Tern Island Field Station.
Albatross, boobies, tropicbirds, frigatebirds, noddies and terns, Hawaiian
monk seals, and Hawaiian green sea turtles are some of the species present
on the island. Volunteers will spend roughly 50% of the time in their area
of focus. All crewmembers will also assist with marine debris collection,
cargo preparation, invasive species control, household duties (cooking and
cleaning), and assisting with the logistics required for life on a remote
island. Assignments will vary depending on current management and research
needs. All volunteers in the Monument are offered a unique opportunity for a
hands-on wildlife experience, but must be willing to do whatever work needs
to be done.Tern is an extremely isolated island with limited contact with
the outside world – limited phones and email, mail every 8+ weeks, with
limited availability of fresh food. Tern Island is only one kilometer long;
the other islands in the atoll are smaller. Volunteers should be able to
work well with a small team in a professional and safe manner.
Due to the remoteness of the atoll, safety is of utmost importance for all
residents. Alcohol is not permitted on Tern Island. Tern Island volunteers
work hard, but gain a unique and wonderful experience. The opportunity is
available for students, retirees, those seeking wildlife or remote island
work experience, researchers, and others. Let us know your goals for your
experience on island, and we will work together on them, if within the scope
of current work.

NEST-SEARCHERS (2) needed on the big island of Hawaii – Michigan Tech
University. Location: Hilo, Hawaii. Duration: Jan-Jul 2012. Application
Deadline: 1 Oct 2011.
Job Description: HAWAII BIRD NEST-SEARCHERS (2) needed for 6 months (Jan
9 – July 9, 2012). We are seeking committed, enthusiastic, and hard-working
nest-searchers to work with native birds on the Big Island of Hawaii. The
primary role of the nest-searchers will be to search for and monitor nests
of forest passerines in mid-elevation native Hawaiian forest patches. In
addition, nest-searchers will be expected to assist with re-sighting color
banded birds and setting up mist-nets, including carrying heavy poles across
the lava. Nest-searchers will often work unsupervised and will be
responsible for driving Forest Service vehicles to the field sites. Work
will begin at 5:30 am and end between 3 and 5 pm, five days/week. Hawaiian
birds hide their nests extremely well, often placing them 10 to 20 meters
high in the canopy, and so nest-searchers MUST have prior experience finding
bird nests in difficult conditions. Nest-searchers should also possess good
record-keeping skills, a solid work ethic, and be in good physical condition
because field work will take place in a rugged, often wet, and sometimes
cool landscape. In addition to the above desirable skills, we are seeking
individuals who work well with others under difficult field conditions;
nest-searchers will work as part of a 6 person field crew and will live in a
common house with two people per bedroom. Amenities include working with one
of the most unique and imperiled bird communities in the world and the
opportunity to explore the big island of Hawaii during free time. This is a
full-time temporary position.
Nest-searchers are responsible for their airfare to Hilo, HI and will
receive a stipend of $800/mo. Housing will be provided, but no
transportation is available. Nest-searchers should be prepared to take the
bus, buy a bicycle, or walk to get groceries or go to the beach.
Send a cover letter, resume, and a list of three references via email
(please put: Kipuka Nest-searcher in subject line) to JESSIE KNOWLTON
(EM: jlknowlton AT gmail.com). We will begin reviewing applications as soon
as they arrive.
