AVIAN SURVEY AND BANDING VOLUNTEER RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (6-8) -
Organization: Life Net. Location: Loma Alta, Ecuador. Dates of project:
4-19 Dec 2011. Duties: Assist with bird banding, bird surveys in a remote
cloud-forest protected area and with community-based environmental education
about biodiversity and ecology. The project operates in Spanish and English.
Desired Qualifications: Applicants should be in excellent physical
condition. Experience with mist-netting is an asset along with good birding
skills (but, we will train, so biology students are most welcome). Some

BIRDING AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS (6-8)-Organization: Life Net.

Duties: Support a local Kenyan birdwatching company by birding with them for
two weeks, and help a Maasai community develop a walking safari with an
emphasis on birding. Qualifications: Good birding and people skills, some

RAPTOR BIOLOGISTS - Tetra Tech is seeking local raptor biologists to
participate on an eagle study near Idaho Falls, ID. The work will entail
spending long hours scanning for raptors and recording flight paths and
heights. Minimum qualifications include: (1) At least a BS in wildlife
biology or related field, (2) ability to identify and age raptors in flight,
particularly bald and golden eagles, (3) the ability to operate
ATVs/snowmobiles, 4) experience with GPS units and topographical maps,
(4) attention to detail when recording data, (5) willingness to work long
hours in extremely cold and windy conditions, (6) ability to work
cooperatively with others under somewhat stressful conditions. Surveys will

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE - Agency: University of South Dakota,
Department of Biology. Location: Vermillion, SD. Job Description: We seek a
postdoc for a project modeling the potential future effects of landscape
change on cottonwood forests and breeding songbirds along a large portion of
the Missouri River in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The
postdoc will model changes in future forest area and age distribution as a
function of successional processes, river management, and land use, and the
potential effects of these changes on abundances of selected songbird
species. This project will involve little or no collection of new field data
(with the exception of some land cover mapping), but will focus primarily on
integrating/synthesizing existing GIS, vegetation, and songbird data sets to
project the implications of current management and land use trajectories on
Missouri River floodplain forests. Expected products include development of
publications, as well as models and projections useful for federal agencies
managing cottonwood forests along the Missouri River. The postdoc will be
housed in the lab of Dr. Mark Dixon at the University of South Dakota (URL:

running Golden Eagle study in the Western Hemisphere. This position would be
based in Ramona, CA (San Diego County backcountry) at our headquarters. The
position, starting immediately and lasting at least 1 year, possibly
permanent, may involve the completion of the following types of tasks:
ground and aerial (helicopter and fixed wing) surveys for golden
eagles/raptors, pre- and post-construction monitoring of golden
eagles/raptors at energy facilities, data entry, analysis and QA/QC, report
preparation, golden eagle trapping and banding including satellite
telemetry, spring and fall raptor migration surveys, and general studies of
golden eagle nesting activity. Additional duties may also be assigned on an
as-needed basis and may include surveys for other wildlife species, project
management, land acquisition/management, grant writing, permit preparation
and educational presentations/lectures on WRI's golden eagle research and
general raptor/wildlife natural history and ecology.
Attention to detail, computer skills (GIS training a plus), the
willingness/ability to work alone or with minimal supervision, as well as in
teams are required. Field work requires a substantial amount of hiking,
often with heavy packs, rock climbing and will be conducted under a variety
of weather conditions. Prior experience with golden eagles/raptors,
including collecting and recording data from the ground/air and banding as
well as identifying other Southern California wildlife species is highly
desirable. Prior experience identifying North American raptors on the wing
is required. Qualified candidates should have minimum of a Bachelor's degree
in an environmental field. Strong verbal communication skills are essential,

Job Description: 2 technicians needed in California's Central
Valley: 1 in San Joaquin Valley (ASAP - Mar 2012) and 1 in Sacramento Valley
(Oct 2011 - Mar 2012). Sacramento Valley work will be related to compatible
agriculture practices in post-harvest rice fields and will include bi-weekly
surveys of waterbirds in rice. San Joaquin Valley work will be related to
compatible agriculture practices in forage crops (e.g. alfalfa, wheat) and

independently following a standardized protocol and data entry in Access.

waterbirds is necessary and the most commonly seen waterbirds are herons,

PH.D. GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT, Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory,
Southern Illinois University Carbondale. We are looking for a graduate
research assistant at the Ph.D. level to study relationships between
grassland birds, habitat, and predators in Illinois. Primary project
objectives include: (1) Evaluate the effectiveness of CP33 fields in
attracting grassland birds (with a strong focus on pheasant and bobwhite)
and assess nest predation in those fields, and (2) Monitor the response of
predators to CP33 fields. This is a well-funded study, and housing for
graduate students and technicians will be paid for by the project during the
field season (summer). Salary will be $1,494/mo + tuition waiver and field

INTERN - Pinnacles National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service,
is looking for one full-time (40 hours per week) intern to assist with
monitoring captive and wild California condors (Gymnogyps californianus).
The primary duties of the intern will be: 1.) Tracking, monitoring and
recording condor movements, behaviors and interactions.
2.) Communicating with park visitors and local community members. 3.)
Observing and recording feeding behaviors. 4) Placing animal carcasses at
bait stations. This internship will require: a great attention to detail,
the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently, an interest
in talking with the public, the stomach to handle and transport animal
carcasses, flexibility to work at night on occasion, ability to hike up to
10 miles on steep and rugged terrain carrying 40+ lbs of equipment,

VOLUNTEER POSITION, Sexual Selection in Satin Bowerbirds, New South Wales,
Australia. Field assistants are needed for the study of mate choice in satin
bowerbirds (Ptilonorhyncus violaceus) conducted by Dr.
Gerald Borgia's lab at the University of Maryland, College Park (URL:

The Wallaby Creek study site is in southeastern New South Wales, Australia.
This is a long term study of mate choice which follows the success of male
bower holders and female visitation at bowers.
Assistants are needed for one of two sessions: the first runs from early Sep
through mid-Oct, and the second runs from mid-Oct to no later than
23 Dec (specific dates to be determined). Assistants must arrange for travel
to and from the field site. This is an unpaid position, though we will
provide food and lodging at the site. Tasks assistants will perform for the
first session include, but are not limited to, trapping bowerbirds, locating
bower sites and clearing trails. For the second session, duties include
monitoring the behavior of bowerbirds at bowers with infrared sensing
equipment and camcorders, maintaining equipment and direct observation of
bowerbirds. The work is physically demanding and assistants must be focused
and flexible in their requirements.

Contract. Job Description: Cypress Hills Migration Monitoring Project -
Summary: The Calgary Bird Banding Society is a non-profit research
organization conducting the second year of a pilot migration monitoring
project in the Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Alberta. A bander-in-charge
(BIC) is required to operate a passerine migration monitoring station (Sep)
and Northern Saw-whet Owl monitoring (Oct). A qualified candidate is
expected to have substantial experience in ageing, sexing, banding, and
mist-netting eastern and western North American passerines. Supervision and
training of volunteers, data quality control and data entry are among duties
required of the BIC.
Public and educational demonstrations will be requested by CHPP interpretive
staff on a periodic basis. The stations will be open every day weather
permitting. As NSWO banding begins 15 Sep there will be overlap of passerine
migration monitoring and NSWO monitoring for a portion of the contract term.
