JOB OPPORTUNITY - Position #1105

 

Position Title:                   Field Assistant 

 

Supervisor:                       Senior Conservation Scientist,
Conservation Education

 

Location:                          Various locations statewide

 

Salary Range:                   $12 to $16 per hour, commensurate with
training and experience.

Term of Employment:      Approximately 16 weeks.  Start and end dates are
flexible from March 2011, ending September, 2011.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of study towards B.S. or Associates Degree
in botany, ecology, wildlife biology or closely related field.  

 

Description of Position and Duties:   Field assistant will be responsible
for conducting literature reviews, surveys of terrestrial and invasive
plants and rare species, monitoring and education.  Duties also include
entering data, developing and delivering presentations, meetings, planning,
and other tasks as needed.  Desired qualifications include working knowledge
of Michigan and/or Midwestern fauna, flora, and ecosystems; strong botanical
skills and additional experience with Michigan's rare and vulnerable species
and ArcMap or ArcGIS preferred.  Field assistant will work closely with
principle investigator and project lead. 

 

Field sampling will regularly require long hours under potentially adverse
working conditions (e.g., hot and humid weather, long and difficult hikes in
waders).  Frequent work over two week periods is expected and work on
holidays and/or weekends may be required.  Applicants must have a valid
driver's license and may be required to use their own vehicle (mileage will
be reimbursed at the standard MSU rate).  Meal and lodging costs will be
reimbursed when overnight stay is required. Ability to comfortably navigate
in remote areas on land or in water with waders, kayak, canoe and/or small
motor boat using aerial photography, compass, and/or GPS is essential.

to work both independently and as part of a team.
