Job Description:
Coordinate the recovery of marine mammal carcasses for necropsy from the southeast Florida (Broward, Miami-Dade, Martin, Monroe, Palm Beach, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties). Transport fresh and moderately decomposed manatee carcasses to central necropsy facility in St. Petersburg. Conduct necropsy's on badly decomposed manatee carcasses and complete associated necropsy report. Coordinate manatee rescue operations in southeast Florida overseeing vessel operation, capture, and transportation of animal to appropriate oceanaria. Responsible for accurate sample collection and measurements along with photographic documentation of carcasses. Responsible for appropriate disposal of carcasses. Serve in a statewide on-call status after operating hours in a weekly rotation with four other staff members for the purpose of coordinating statewide responses to manatee emergencies 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Plan and conduct or participate in marine mammal field research projects ! such as aerial surveys, manatee captures to conduct GPS and radio-tracking of individual animals and/or health assessments, managing a network of remote temperature probes, and conducting the photo-identification program. Manage data, analyze, and write scientific reports. Responsible for daily operation of marine mammal activities at Tequesta Field Laboratory including: telephone and written communications, coordination of required purchases, maintaining inventory of marine mammal property located at Tequesta Lab, preventative maintenance and repair of field equipment, vehicles, boats, and trailers. Responsible for preparation of reports, grant writing, and serving on internal and external teams as requested. Responsible for the supervision of assigned OPS personnel, including (but not limited to): recruitment, training, planning and directing work, reviewing performance with employee and ensuring compliance with Commission rules, policies and procedures. Maint! ain existing and establish new external agency and volunteer partnersh ips for the purposes of marine mammal rescue and carcass recovery. Perform related work as required. Promote and participate in public outreach efforts as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree with a major in the life or physical sciences and one year of professional biological experience in a field or lab research program.
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants having experience with marine mammal rescue coordination, necropsies and stranding, as well as those possessing working mechanical knowledge of vehicles, trailers, and small engines will be given preference.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience in capture, handling, transport, and necropsy of manatees and/or other marine mammals. Knowledge of biological sciences; principles and techniques used in research on marine mammals; methods of data collection; principles and techniques of research and analysis associated with marine mammals. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability and willingness to fly aerial surveys. Ability to collect and analyze data; utilize problem solving techniques; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures; prepare written reports; track budget and access budgetary needs; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; use personal computers and database software; supervise people; work under adverse conditions such as recovering, transporting, and necropsying rotting carcasses. Ability to swim with sufficient skil! l to save oneself in the event of an emergency; safely operate vehicles, trailers and boats up to 22'; maintain a valid driver's license and work hours in excess of 40 per week and serve in on-call status on a rotational basis; and acquire certification of completion of a boater safety course within the probationary period.
