Ph.D. Assistantship
Gulf of Maine Research Institute/University of Maine
In anticipation of funding, The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) and
the University of Maine are seeking applicants for a three-year Ph.D.
Assistantship to execute a large-scale Atlantic herring acoustic survey in
coastal waters of the Gulf of Maine and integrate results into assessment
models. The successful applicant will develop and/or expand their expertise
in acoustic fisheries assessment and population dynamics modeling, while
working closely and collaboratively with the Maine lobster and herring
fishing industries and state, federal, and academic stock assessment
scientists.
Candidates must have a M.Sc. in fisheries science, ecology, or other related
field, possess strong quantitative skills, have an interest in applied
research, and be able to communicate effectively with stakeholders
(individually and collectively). Time at sea will be required and the
successful applicant must be able to work effectively on the water under
inclement conditions at night. Previous experience with acoustics, working
with the fishing industry, and/or population modeling is desired but not
necessary.
Applicants should email application (letter of interest, CV, and names of
three references) to [log in to unmask] with "Herring Acoustic Project" in the
subject line. Additionally, applicants must submit a graduate application to
the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences
(http://www.umaine.edu/marine/admissions/graduate-admissions.php) by January
15, 2011. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Review of applications will begin after January 15, 2011. The assistantship
will start June or September 2011, subject to funding.
For more information, please contact Drs. Jason Stockwell (
