Title, Series, and Grade: Fish Biologist, GS-482-9/11
Location: Heber City, Utah
Housing: Government Housing may be available in Kamas, Utah (28 miles from
Heber City).
Duties: Provide support in the management of fish/aquatic resources on
multiple districts across the forests. Provide technical verbal and written
support on vegetation, range, recreation, minerals and wildlife projects.
The biologist serves as a technical contact for the public and other agency
on fish/aquatic resources. Jointly coordinates aquatic resource management
activities with other state and local agencies and groups. Ensures plans
are technically sound and adequate in meeting overall natural resource
management objectives for two Forest Plans. Participates in public meetings
as assigned and works with partners to improve coordination in aquatic
resource management.
Fishery Resources: The forest has over 2,000 miles of perennial stream,
26,800 acres of lakes/reservoirs, and 2,300 acres of marshes. Strawberry
Reservoir is largest water body on the forests covering 17,160 acres. The
forest has 9 native and 14 introduced fish and 8 native amphibians. There
are no Endangered or Threatened fish on the forests and 2 sensitive fish and
one sensitive amphibian. The sensitive species have interagency
conservation agreements and strategies.

The Uinta and Wasatch-Cache National Forests encompass over 2 million acres
in northern and north-central Utah, and southwestern Wyoming. The Forests
adjoin the largest population center within the State of Utah, which is
known as the Wasatch Front. The Forests are heavily influenced and impacted
from over a million people living nearby and because of this, are considered
urban Forests.
The forests include a variety of ecosystems ranging from high western desert
to lofty mountain peaks. Both offer unlimited recreational opportunities
throughout the year. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling,
hiking, mountain biking, camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, swimming,
horseback riding, etc., you can find the recreational experience you are
seeking. Because of the abundance of recreation opportunities and the large
urban population along the Wasatch Front, the Uinta and Wasatch-Cache
National Forests are one of the most heavily visited in the entire National
Forest system. There are nine Wilderness areas on the Forests. The National
Park Service <http://www.nps.gov/tica/index.htm> 's Timpanogos Cave National
Monument is located within the Uinta NF. Though urban, the Forests support
the full range of multiple uses including a timber program, hazardous fuel,
oil and gas exploration and production, grazing and a significant
recreation program. Watershed management is also an important emphasis on
the Forests because of the large number of municipal watersheds.

Heber City, Utah is located in Wasatch County (Heber Valley) approximately
30 miles northeast of Provo and 45 miles southeast of the Salt Lake City
area. Wasatch County has an estimated population of 17,500. Most of the
residents reside in Heber Valley's four cities: Heber City, Charleston,
Midway, and Wallsburg. Heber City serves as the county seat with a
population of approximately 8,600.
Heber Valley offers a year-round recreation paradise. A wide range of
activities are available for the outdoor enthusiast, including fishing,
hunting, camping, back-packing, horseback riding, mountain biking, golfing,
sailing, boating, mountain climbing, snowmobiling, skiing, and snowboarding.
Scenic drives can be found in any direction. This is also the gateway to
many wilderness areas, including Lone Peak, Timpanogos, Nebo, and the High
Uintas. Many other recreation areas are a day's drive or less from Heber
Valley, since there are more National Parks and Monuments in Utah than in
any other State.
The elevation is 4,492 feet above sea level. Wasatch County has a total
surface area of 1,207 square miles. Residents enjoy a 4-season healthy and
pleasant climate, with low humidity. Temperatures range from an average low
in the mid-teens in the winter to average highs in the summer in the low
90's. Annual precipitation averages approximately 16 inches.
A number of public and private schools (kindergarten through 12th grade) are
available locally. In addition, Utah Valley has 2, 4-year colleges-Brigham
Young University <http://www.byu.edu/> and Utah Valley University. Other
colleges include Stevens Henagar College <http://www.stevenshenager.com/> ,
University of Phoenix of Utah <http://www.uophx.edu/> , and Provo College.
Wasatch County Hospital is located in Heber Valley. Nearby Utah Valley is
home to over 150 medical and dental clinics as well as being serviced by
four hospitals--American Fork Hospital, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center,
Orem Community Hospital, and Timpanogos Regional Hospital. Nearby Salt Lake
City is also home to another 13 hospitals.
In Heber Valley, rentals for 1- and 2-bedroom apartments range from
$450-$600 per month, with 2- and 3-bedroom houses renting for $700 to $1000.
Sale prices of existing homes have ranged from $90,000 to $450,000 in recent
years. The average residential sale is around $175,000. No Government
housing is available in Heber City. Housing may be available in Kamas which
is 28 miles for Heber.
An incredible variety of recreation opportunities are close to Heber City.
Utah is home to what is called the "Greatest snow on Earth." There are many
ski resorts within an hour drive from Heber Valley, providing excellent
skiing and snowboarding in the winter. Heber is also about an hour drive
from <http://www.saltlake.org/> Salt Lake City, the <http://www.utah.edu/>
University of Utah and the <http://www.utahjazz.com/> Utah Jazz (NBA
basketball team).
Churches of most denominations can be found within a 10-mile radius,
including Assembly of God, Baptist, Catholic, Church of Christ, Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Episcopal, Jehovah's Witness, Lutheran,
Nazarene, Presbyterian, Seventh-Day Adventist, etc.
In addition to many area businesses and several shopping centers, several
malls are located in nearby Utah Valley and Salt Lake County.

With a total population of approximately 1,274, Kamas is located 45 miles
east of downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, and is nestled in the foothills of
the Uinta Mountains. The main thoroughfare on the District, the Mirror Lake
Scenic Byway, winds its way north through a labyrinth of lakes, vistas and
peaks towards the Evanston Ranger District and into Wyoming. The Byway is
the main access to nearly 400 lakes found in the Uinta Mountain Range. The
Uinta Mountains run east to west, rather than the typical north-south
orientation, a unique featured shared by few mountain ranges in the world.
The main industries are cattle ranching and tourism. Home to the South
Summit School systems (incorporating elementary, middle and high schools),
Kamas is the location for education to students from the nearby towns of
Peoa, Oakley, Francis, Marian, Samac, and Woodland, in addition to student
from Weber and Mirror Lake Canyons. Average housing costs in the local
vicinity range from $238,990 to $850,000.
