Subject: [Tws-l] Black bear PhD assistantship
BLACK BEAR ECOLOGY RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP
Title: Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistantship: Spatial Ecology and Harvest Vulnerability of Black Bears in Urban/Suburban Habitats in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia
Collaborating Partners: West Virginia University, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Game Commission, New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife
Job Description: Seeking a highly motivated student for an ecological study of black bears in urban/suburban environments. The focus of the study is to examine the spatial ecology and harvest vulnerability of black bears in urban/suburban habitats in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. State wildlife agencies in the 3 participating states will be responsible for identifying study areas, capturing black bears within their study areas, fitting GPS radio-collars to captured bears, and providing location data from GPS collars for analysis. Black bears will be captured in nuisance situations or in forested areas adjacent to residential areas. Major objectives of the study will be to identify and quantitatively assess: (1) if black bears captured as result of nuisance complaints are transient or reside in urban/suburban habitats; (2) if black bears shift home ranges seasonally with respect to urban/suburban habitats; (3) harvest vulnerability and cause-specific mortality of black bears in urban/suburban habitats; (4) habitat characteristics of movement corridors utilized by black bears in urban/suburban habitats; and (5) if corridors likely to be used by black bears accessing urban/suburban environments can be predicted by habitat modeling.
Salary: $18,000 with tuition waiver
Qualifications: Desirable skills in a candidate include a background in wildlife and forest management, population and habitat modeling experience, and GIS proficiency. Candidates must have a strong work ethic, ability to work independently and cooperatively, undergraduate and master’s degrees in wildlife or related field and good quantitative skills. A GPA >3.2/4.0 and GRE (verbal and math) >1000 is required.
Start date for the position is May 2011.
To Apply: Submit letter of interest (why you want to work on this project, your research and career interests, etc.), resume, copy of transcripts and GRE scores, and contact information for 3 references
