Description of duties: Incumbent is responsible for day to day operations on
the Dinner Island Ranch Wildlife Management Area located in Hendry County
for the Division of Habitat and Species Conservation.  Specific duties
include developing and implementing budgets and annual operational plans,
providing direct supervision for 1 FTE, providing oversight and
participating in hydrologic and vegetative restoration programs, developing
and promoting public use programs including both hunting and non-hunting
uses, and setting management and restoration objectives consistent with
agency and division directives.

RATE OF PAY:   $15.00 - $22.00 per hour depending on experience.  40
hrs/week. 
This is an OPS (Other Personal Service) position.  It offers no benefits or
moving expenses.  Occasional overtime hours may be required. Hours worked
over 40 per week , Friday to Thursday, are considered overtime and are paid
@ 1.5 times the regular wage.
NOTE:  Candidates that are selected for interview will also be required to
present a short seminar on research activities in which they have been or
are currently involved with.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Primary duties will be to coordinate and oversee a fisher based Atlantic red
snapper tagging program along the east coast of Florida. Work closely with
members of the commercial and recreational fishing industry to ensure that
participants are trained in proper fish handling, tagging, and data
collection techniques required by the program. Responsible for maintaining
tagging records and proofing/correcting data to ensure accurate entry into
tagging database. Respond in a timely manner to documented reports of tagged
fish with appropriate written communication and fisher reward. Assist in the
development and application of a fishery-independent monitoring program
designed to assess the life history, ecology, and population structure of
reef fish species along the east coast of Florida, with specific emphasis on
Atlantic red snapper populations. Assist in the development of appropriate
sampling techniques (seines, trawls, fish traps, long lines, video, etc) to
evaluate the ! distribution, abundance, size structure, growth,
reproduction, and other population characteristics of reef fishes and other
fishes along the east coast of Florida. Analyze fisheries data from above
mentioned projects using appropriate statistical techniques. Prepare
technical reports, scientific reports, and manuscripts for submittal to
scientific journals based on above studies. Deliver written and oral
presentations of program results at local, state, and national meetings.
Assist in the identification of possible sources of external funds and
prepare proposals to those granting agencies. Assist with field data
collections, data analysis, and manuscript preparations of various other
ongoing fishery-independent programs throughout the State based on
programmatic needs. Promote and participate in public outreach efforts. Must
be able to travel out of the area, stay overnight, work weekends, and put in
extended hours during field research activities. Selected candidate will! be
required to maintain a valid driver's license.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Minimum Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences
from an accredited college or university and 3 years relevant experience in
fisheries research.
Candidates that have documented experience pertaining to the design,
implementation, and coordination of tagging programs or reef fish population
surveys are encouraged to apply.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: principles and techniques used in scientific research; of
juvenile and adult fish identification; of methods and gear used for the
collection of reef fishes; of use of personal computers, database software,
and statistical analysis.
Ability to: conduct scientific research and perform quantitative analysis of
scientific data; collect and analyze fisheries data; write professional
quality grant proposals, technical reports, and peer reviewed manuscripts;
perform strenuous field duties in adverse conditions (e.g. inclement
weather, rough water, boat engine exhaust, shoreline wading); establish and
maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and members of the
fishing industry; effectively deal with and present scientific data to the
public; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to participate
in multi-day offshore research cruises aimed at collecting biological data
on reef fish communities; work in excess of 40 hours per week; work
independently as well as on a team; utilize problem solving techniques; and
maintain a valid driver's license.
Skill needed: to safely operate and trailer boats less than 28' in length.
