Job Title: GIS Technician

Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to gather, prepare, and analyze data that
will be used to assist Tribal Environmental services in protecting and
restoring the natural resources of the Tribe. The incumbent will be
responsible for establishing and maintaining an environmental information
spatial database and overseeing its distribution and deployment for planning
purposes towards the maintenance and enhancement of the Tribe's natural
resources and environment.
Job Complexity:
Collects and maintains information about data sources available to the
Tribe, obtains data, incorporates data into GIS system and maintains data.
Makes recommendations regarding GIS system hardware, software, and data
structure needs. Drafts protocols for data acquisition, maintenance,
analysis, distribution, and use. Operates GIS system to provide requested
geographic analysis products for other Environment and Natural Resources
staff in a timely manner as required. Trains other Environment and Natural
Resources program staff in minor uses of GIS system, following appropriate
protocols. Helps solve problems by recommending analysis products for
Environment and Natural Resources staff. Ensures that all GIS and GPS
equipment is safely and correctly used, maintained, and stored. Maintains
and improves professional development through seminars, trainings, home
study, in-service, and continuing education. Develops cooperative team
relationships with co-workers, associated departments, teams of volunteers,
consultants, other tribes, Federal and State agencies as appropriate to
achieve program goals. Keeps updated on Tribal policies and procedures.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Accountability:
Responsible for accurate and timely performance of work. Responsible to
ensure that all appropriate data integrity protocols are followed by
department staff. Responsible for locating the best and most up to date
information regarding data integrity procedures and ensuring that these
procedures are followed. Responsible for following Tribal policy and
procedures and keep updated as they change. Accountable to ensure Tribal
Environmental Regulations are followed. Accountable to have work
assignments meet deadlines.
Contacts:
Contacts with fellow employees, supervisor, teams of volunteers including
youth, County, Federal, and State Agencies, Tribal Governments, Consultants,
and Inter-Tribal Agencies as required to complete tasks.
Working conditions/Safety Hazards:
Work in general office/clean lab conditions. Occasional work outdoors in
generally agreeable weather and environmental conditions. Supervising teams
of youth in such environments.
Job Specifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in a physical or natural science or in Geography
or Geographic Information Systems. Experience working with Geographic
Information Systems in a responsible role. Will be required to undergo and
successfully pass a background check suitable for working with youth. Must
maintain a good moral character standing such as would serve as a good role
model for youth. Must have valid drivers license and be insurable by the
Sault Tribe Insurance Department. Must comply with annual driver license
review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing. Native
American preferred.
