Title: Biological Science Technician (Wildlife)
Agency: USDA Forest Service
Location: Mio, MI
Job Description: GS-5 or GS-7 Wildlife Technician needed from July to
December 2010, with the opportunity to rehire in spring 2011 for 6 months.
Duties include surveying for sensitive species (birds, invertebrates,
reptiles, and amphibians); conducting inventory and writing prescriptions
for wildlife openings; managing openings database in Microsoft Access;
making maps in ArcMap; inspecting contract work; assisting with wildlife
projects such as impoundment maintenance, wildlife openings maintenance,
weed pulling; entering survey data into GIS database; conducting Kirtland's
warbler tours for the public if rehired in spring.
Qualifications
Minimum:
. B.S. or B.A. in Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, or
closely related field.
. quick learner that can work safely in the field
. ability to follow survey protocols and collect accurate field data
. ability to work independently
. ability to work as part of a team and potentially lead a field
crew
. ability to communicate effectively with the public
. ability to work in the field under extreme weather conditions
(cold, hot, rain, snow), buggy conditions (mosquitoes, black flies) and
variable work schedules (early mornings and some weekends)
. over 18 years of age, and a U.S. Citizen
. must have a valid Driver's License
Preferred Skills:
* Able to identify: birds by sight and/or song, butterflies, snakes,
amphibians
* Experience with:
* Driving 4WD pickup trucks
* Reading maps and aerial photographs
* Orienteering using a GPS unit and compass
* Tree and plant identification
o ArcMap and Microsoft Office experience

Bachelor's degree or 1 year at GS-4 level required for GS-5 position. GS-7
position requires a minimum 1 year graduate level education or 1 year at
GS-6 level.

Salary: $15 - 18.59/hour, depending on education and
experience. Housing may be available at $4-5/day for employees.
