Duties: Designs and conducts wildlife habitat analyses of land management activities proposed and implemented on State trust land. Reviews proposals and inspects field sites. Recommends actions that develop, preserve, or maintain wildlife habitat in connection with land management projects including, but not limited to timber sales, road construction and access, grazing, and recreation. Determines environmental impacts associated with manipulating wildlife habitat features in forest ecosystems. Writes technical reports, wildlife management recommendations, and sections of Environmental Assessments (EA) and Environmental Impact Statements (EIS). Determines habitat values for a wide variety of species by observing field signs and obtaining data that relate on-site to wider habitat conditions. Responsible for collecting, compiling, maintaining, and interpreting data. Evaluates effectiveness of appropriate wildlife standards, guidelines, laws and regulations governing state trust lands. Coordinates with DNRC Forest Management Bureau wildlife biologist, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other professional biologists to develop and interpret research and management guidelines for threatened and endangered species and other wildlife. Develops and presents wildlife training materials to personnel. Participates on interdisciplinary (I.D.) teams for state trust land management projects by managing wildlife habitat analyses and mitigations, and other assigned elements, of the I.D. team work plan. Acts as liaison between the public, Department employees and other officials on wildlife matters. Keeps current in technical aspects of wildlife habitat management through literature review, correspondence, and participation in regional and national symposia and work-shops. Participates in interagency research efforts in wildlife habitat management to promote meaningful study design and useful management-oriented results. Assists in developing budgets and helps manage budgets to ensure compliance and efficient use of available funds. Competencies: Requires working knowledge and understanding of: (1) forestry and other resource programs, practices and problems; (2) ecological concepts such as biological diversity, fire and disturbance ecology, fragmentation, old growth, ecosystem and landscape level analysis; (3) federal, state and local laws and regulations relating to habitat management and land use; (4) familiarity with current grizzly bear research and management. Requires ability to: (1) gather, analyze, synthesize and interpret data; (2) apply principles of wildlife biology and habitat management; (3) use computers to analyze numerical and spatial data; (4) interpret and evaluate technical wildlife research literature; (5) communicate effectively orally and in writing; (6) work effectively with a variety of professionals and diverse publics. Requires high degree of technical judgment, initiative, imagination and originality to: (1) develop guidelines and recommendations for wildlife that are integrated with other objectives; (2) recognize new approaches or techniques in problem-solving, and; (3) overcome difficult on-the-ground situations that often require deviations from established guidelines or development of new ones. Must be physically fit and able to work in the field in all seasons. Requires approximately 1000 miles travel per month. Education/Experience: The knowledge, skills and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's degree in wildlife management or closely related biological science and two years of professional experience in wildlife management.
