Position/Title: M.S. or Ph.D. Graduate Assistantship, New York Cooperative
Fish & Wildlife Research Unit and Department of Natural Resources, Cornell

Position 1: Relationships between Black Bass Populations and Environmental
Characteristics in New York State
 
Responsibilities:  Assess the status of black bass populations in New York
State waters.  Black bass are the most sought after fish in New York State,
and the last statewide assessment of black bass populations occurred over 30
years ago.  Analyze existing information on black bass populations and fish
communities, compare these characteristics among water bodies and relate
habitat and environmental characteristics, and develop recommendations for a
comprehensive, long-term monitoring programs.
 
Positions 2 & 3: Fate of Stocked Trout and Evaluation of a Trout Stocking
Model in New York State
 
Responsibilities:  Evaluate the fate of hatchery-reared stocked trout in New
York State streams and rivers. Recent creel surveys indicate that in some
circumstances stocked trout are not providing target catch rates for anglers
and survival is lower than expected.  One student will focus on evaluating
the statewide catch-rate oriented trout stocking model, and the other
student will focus on field studies to assess fish population dynamics and
angler harvest rates.
 
Qualifications:  B.S. or M.S. in fisheries, biology, natural resources or
related field; minimum 3.3 GPA; and >1150 math and verbal GRE scores.
Preferred experience:  quantitative data analysis and modeling, quantitative
modeling and parameter estimation, population dynamics and environmental
data, database management and geospatial analyses, fish sampling, angler
surveys, and leading a field crew and working cooperatively with agency
biologists.
 
Salary:  $29,960 stipend per year plus tuition and insurance.
