Subject: [Akchap] ADF&G: Fishery Biologist II position opening
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries has
an interesting and exciting Fishery Biologist II position opening in Nome.
The Norton Sound/Kotzebue Assistant Area Research Biologist, assesses
stocks, population characteristics, and run timing, and develops databases
for the research program and activities affecting conservation, management,
and restoration of Pacific salmon, herring, and crab populations in Norton
Sound/Kotzebue Area. Responsibilities include planning, implementing,
supervising and conducting field studies as well as evaluating and
synthesizing fishery information. This position would be ideal for a recent
MS graduate or someone with commensurate experience.
Interesting aspects of this position include:
- studying the northernmost sockeye salmon population
- conducting research on a variety of topics and areas across
Norton Sound
- conducting sockeye salmon restoration study involving juvenile
sampling and enumeration, and limnology sampling of the rearing lake to
assess productivity and whether supplemental nutrient additions are
required;
- assisting management staff with winter crab projects including
travelling out on sea ice with snowmobiles to set crab pots and retrieve
crab pots, and measuring and recording age, sex and length (ASL) data;
- analyzing crab data to evaluate trends in recruitment that are
used in the crab model program to estimate the legal male biomass;
- assist with ASL work during the summer crab season;
- providing run status recommendations based on inseason analyses
and interpretation of data from test fishing, sonar, harvest-sampling and
escapement projects;
- additional projects may include juvenile salmon assessments and
Chinook fecundity studies; and
- assisting in evaluation of spawning and harvest goals.
- participating genetic baseline collections throughout Norton
Sound.
