Summer Field Research Technician Lamprey Biology
Description:
We are seeking two Field Technicians to assist with a graduate study
involving lamprey behavior and physiology. The project will examine the
production and use of pheromones by lamprey native to Michigan. We will also
observe the response of native lamprey to pheromones used by the invasive
sea lamprey. The research will be conducted in northern Michigan, near
Millersburg. Successful applicants will hired through the Fisheries and
Wildlife Department of Michigan State University, and will work closely
with the Hammond Bay Biological Station (USGS), and the US Fish and Wildlife
Service.
Duties:
Assist with the preparation and execution of nighttime behavioral
stream-side experiments. This work will consist of extensive handling of
chestnut, silver, northern brook, American brook, and sea lamprey, including
dissections and tagging. Assistants will be required to help construct and
maintain field sites. A normal work day will involve travel to field sites
in a provided work truck, checking cages for mature animals, transporting
heavy equipment, calibrating pumps, and setting up video equipment to record
trials, and analysis of behavioral data. Some laboratory work will be
required such as collecting tissues and water samples and conducting
pheromone extractions.
Qualifications:
Must have a valid driver's license. Enrollment in biology/fisheries program
is desirable. Must be willing to work during night hours, handle fish, and
be competent in basic construction skills and electronics. Previous field
work is desirable. Need to be self motivated, responsible, and able to work
independently.
Dates needed: May 1, 2010 - August 2010, Flexible
Compensation:
$10.50/hour. Shared housing near Millersburg will be provided.
