Summer Field Research Assistant ? Sea Lamprey Biology
Project Description and Services Required: We are conducting field
experiments to determine how chemical signals (pheromones) are used by Sea
Lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) to locate spawning grounds. We will be
conducting acoustic tracking via a stationary array in Lake Huron to
consider what factors or behavioral mechanisms are used to locate ideal
spawning grounds.
Projects are planned in the Ocqueoc river in northern Michigan near
Millersburg beginning in early April and continuing into late July or
possibly through mid-August. During the summer you will be working regularly
with staff from the Hammond Bay Biological Station (USGS), the US Fish and
Wildlife Service, the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and other
MSU faculty and students. Experiments are planned to take place during day
and overnight hours. A typical work day will be one hour of travel to and
from the sites and 6-7 hours of work including: 1)visually monitoring,
tagging, and release of Sea Lamprey; 2) Upkeep of the acoustic array and
monitoring of river conditions via boat and, 3) retrieving lamprey from
traps. A typical work week will be 30-50 hours in duration, depending on
weather. We will provide a government vehicle for travel between survey
locations, survey-related field gear (e.g., waders) and local shared-housing
during the field season. Successful applicants will be part of an exciting
new project on the cutting edge of invasive species management.
Qualifications: Completion of two or more years of college-level coursework
in fisheries, ecology, or a closely-related discipline is desirable.
Applicants should be competent at fish handling and preference will be given
based on previous field research experience and earliest availability. You
must be a licensed driver (preferably Michigan license). We are looking for
a mature, responsible, enthusiastic and self motivated individual who works
well with others and does not require constant supervision. Applicant may
be required to: 1) build and maintain equipment or experimental setups; 2)
carefully handle expensive equipment; 3) lift and carry heavy equipment in
the field and, 4) be able to maintain a hard, high-quality work ethic even
under sometimes harsh summer conditions.
Compensation: $10/hr. Shared housing will be provided in the Millersburg
area.

letter to: Trevor Meckley, 13 Natural Resources Building, Michigan State
University, East Lansing, MI, 48824. Email: [log in to unmask]
