Description of Duties:
This position requires proficient operation, maintenance and repair of equipment for resource management purposes. The type of equipment includes: swamp buggies, ATVs, tractors, and mowers. Other responsibilities include maintenance of roads, trails, fences, gates and signs, operation of a hunter check station, collection of biological samples (jawbones, tissue samples, etc.) from harvested animals, chemical treatment of exotic plants, and custodial functions such as trash pickup and camping area maintenance. The person will also assist the biologist in activities such as prescribed burning and wildlife surveys and may assist in training and supervising seasonal personnel and volunteers.
Below is a breakdown of estimated time the incumbent will spend performing duties:
50% = Equipment - Operation, routine maintenance and minor repairs of heavy equipment, including tractors, swamp buggies, ATV's, 4x4 trucks, mowers, trailers, chainsaws and other miscellaneous equipment.
20% = Land Management - Participate in conducting prescribed burns, mechanically and chemically controlling native and exotic vegetation (requires some math skills to correctly mix chemicals), plowing fire breaks, and collecting trash.
15% -- Facility Maintenance - Install and maintain signs, fences, campgrounds, parking areas, levees, and check stations, including carpentry and painting.
5% = Biology - Operate hunter check station, including collecting biological data from harvested animals and communicating with the general public. Requires weekend and evening work during hunts. Also assists with periodic wildlife surveys that may require occasional night work.
10% = Administrative - Submit bi-weekly time sheets, monthly vehicle operational reports and other reports as required. Prepare purchase orders and code expenditures into proper accounts. Attend various meetings and training programs as appropriate. Requires some knowledge of computers and ability to accurately complete paperwork.
This job involves strenuous work in extreme weather conditions typical of south Florida and requires the incumbent to be in good physical condition.
