Position Announcement

 

Marine Science Field Technician/Req. No. 2009-1062

Location: Versar, Inc./NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office - NCBO, Annapolis,
Maryland

Overview: Versar, Inc. is looking for a Marine Science Field Technician to
support ongoing ecological sampling and habitat characterizations by the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Chesapeake Bay Office
(NCBO).  The individual will be employed by Versar (http://www.versar.com
<http://www.versar.com/> , and www.esm.versar.com) under contract to NOAA. 

 

The successful candidate will participate in field surveys of aquatic
habitats in the Chesapeake Bay. Work primarily involves acoustic seafloor
mapping surveys with occasional biological sampling surveys. The candidate
will work closely with the NCBO Ecosystem Science Team to integrate aquatic
habitat information into the analysis of the ecosystem status.  The position
will occasionally require overnight travel away from the duty station and
can occur in inclement weather for long hours.  The candidate must be able
to lift and/or haul up to 40lbs of equipment including sonar equipment and
fishing nets. 

 

Duties:

 

-          Compiling data and results from previous research

-          Participating in workgroups to design and evaluate survey
protocols and designs

-          Assisting co-workers and other programs to facilitate data
collection and analysis

-          Providing quality control of habitat survey data

-          Routinely sampling from various vessels and platforms 

-          Equipment and vessel maintenance

 

Qualifications:

 

Required: 

-          Bachelor of Science in a related field

-          Small boat handling experience

-          Basic skills in database management and GIS

-          Field research experience in hydrographic or ecological studies

-           

Desired: 

-          Experience with hydrographic software packages such as Hypack,
Caris, Chesapeake Tech, or other relevant digital sensor software packages  

-          Basic understanding of digital sensor integration and data
logging

-          First Aid/CPR

 

Completion of small boat certifications and first aid/CPR certifications are
required within 90 days.

The duty station for this position is Annapolis, Maryland.
