On Friday, July 21, Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) will
oversee Phase II of a three-phase electrical system upgrade at the Computer
Center. This work will require a complete shutdown of electrical service in
the Computer Center machine room. As a result, many core computing and
networking services will be unavailable starting at 6:00 p.m. Barring
unforeseen problems, all core services will be restored by 11:00 p.m.
During these planned power outages we anticipate access to the campus
network and to the Internet will remain available; however, a number of core
online services will be shut down. These include:
afs.msu.edu
angel.msu.edu
lon-capa.msu.edu
magic.msu.edu
mail.msu.edu
MSUnet Wireless
The virtual Web hosting service that ACNS operates, w3vh, will be down
during the power shutdown; therefore any Web site hosted on w3vh also will
be down.
Phase III of power upgrades is scheduled for Friday, August 4, also from
6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. We expect similar service interruptions at that
time. For more information, including a more complete list of services
affected, please see the computing knowledge base article (article #7129) at
help.msu.edu.
Phase I of Computer Center power improvements took place on March 5,2005.
These ongoing power upgrades will improve the reliability and capacity of
essential electrical services, and will set the stage for flexibility to
respond to emergencies. ACNS strives to schedule these necessary power
upgrades for dates and times that minimize the effects on the university
community.
