I don't know of any good ways to scan IRC logs, or sort them.

Someone said they felt guilty in asking a small question on the
list.  Don't feel that way!  Your small question might be someone
else's bigger question, and your query might help them and you'll
not know that you helped someone...

Lastly, an IRC channel means that people have to be there at a
specific time, which I detest.  I frequently dig into mail from several
days ago (and find it useful).  I couldn't do that with IRC.
